En-route you stop for lunch at the charming Trout Tree Restaurant, built in and around an ancient fig tree. Enjoy a 3 course lunch of home-baked bread, trout chowder, farm-smoked trout or beef with vegetables served with mountain fruits and tea/coffee.

After lunch, you will take an afternoon excursion to Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy. Opened in 1993, the sanctuary is a joint effort between Ol Pejeta, the Jane Goodall Institute and Kenya Wildlife Service to project orphaned and traumatized chimps from within Kenya and also Central and West Africa and continues to provide a refuge for these wonderful creatures to this day.

Following the chimpanzee experience, you continue to your intimate tented camp approximately 1 hour away. Rhino Watch Lodge is a small, low impact tented camp with 7 permanent tents and 7 chalets. Its expansive gardens are home to over 200 species of birdlife and the surrounding wilderness gives a feeling of peace and tranquility.

Day Three: Monday – Lake Naivasha

Today’s journey is amongst one of the most scenic in Kenya. Traversing alongside Solio Ranch there is the opportunity to see zebra and other plains game as you drive. The road progresses into undulating small hills, carpeted with wheat fields. Finally you descend the escarpment of the awe-inspiring Great Rift Valley. From this vantage, you can see the volcanoes of Mt Longonot and Mt Suswa as well as picturesque expanse of Lake Elementaita.

You arrive at your lodge in time for lunch and refreshments. After some time to relax, you continue to Elsamere, the family home of Joy & George Adamson, named for their lion Elsa of ‘Born Free’ fame. Here you will take a tour through their home, which has now been converted to a museum, watch a short video of their work and view Joy’s wildlife sketches which still adorn the walls. Afterwards, a sumptuous afternoon tea is served on the grounds overlooking the lake. Don’t be surprised if cheeky colobus monkeys view you curiously from the treetops. In the late afternoon, you will take a boat ride onto Lake Naivasha to get a closer look at the hippos and bird life that inhabit the area.

The lake is also known for its population of pink flamingos; at certain times of the year these can reach into the hundreds of thousands, creating a natural, movable sea of pink on the lake. It’s quite a sight! Lunch is enjoyed at Baboon Cliff picnic site, with panoramic views over the entire park.

In the afternoon you will visit East African Mission Orphanage (EAMO). Founded in 1997 by an Australian family, EAMO is now home to more than 200 orphaned and disadvantage Kenyan children. Days Five, Six & Seven: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – Masai Mara National Reserve

Continuing southwest, you reach the unparalleled Masai Mara National Reserve in time for lunch and a rest before your first game drive.

The Masai Mara is one of the world’s greatest wildlife arenas and home to Africa’s ‘Big 5’. With one of the highest populations of predators on the continent including lion, leopard and cheetah, the Mara is in a class of its own.

The day’s activities whilst in the Masai Mara are very much determined by the movements of wildlife and the seasons, but a typical stay would see you up by 6am for an early breakfast before heading out on a morning game drive. We aim to get you out into the park as early as possible as this is the coolest part of the day and when the animals are most active. A game drive will last around 3 to 3.5 hours and you’ll return to camp to relax in the hottest part of the day. In the late afternoon, around 3.30pm as the heat of the day wanes, you head back out on a game drive, often pausing to watch the sun sink below the horizon from a picturesque looking, with a sundowner in hand. The final part of the game drive is completed in the dark given you the opportunity to see nocturnal species. Of course there are times when you might pack a picnic lunch and spend an entire day inside the park, only returning for dinner. This is particularly the case when the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra (numbering up to 2 million) visit their Kenyan home during the months of July to September. During these months you may perch at the Mara River hoping to see a migration crossing, or head further afield from camp than usual to witness this spectacle.

A perfect complement to any stay in the Masai Mara is a hot air balloon safari over the reserve. It gives you a unique wildlife experience, but first and foremost it is an experience in tranquility and nature as your balloon glides silently across the plains. It is capped with a delicious breakfast in the bush complete with sparkling wine.

Other optional activities on offer during your stay include a visit to a Masai village. Here you will see their traditional homes, called ‘manyattas’, and learn about their centuries-old customs and traditions. We also offer a Masai guided game walk across the plains; here you have the chance to encounter wildlife, including giraffe, zebra and other plains game, on foot. A uniquely wonderful experience.

You’ll climb the Great Rift Valley one final time, pausing for a photo stop if times allows, before arriving into Nairobi around 1pm. From here you farewell your travelling companions that are not continuing to Tanzania and will be transferred to your downtown hotel for overnight. After lunch we will head towards Lake Manyara and/or Tarangire National Park stopping, if time allows, at the Masai Market – our highlight today is our first game drive in Lake Manyara National Park and/or Tarangire National Park. Lake Manyara is, by African standards, a relatively small park at only 330 km2 and is famous for its tree climbing lions and fantastic bird life. Tarangire is famous for its enormous Baobab trees and the large herds of elephants that walk among them.

Day Eleven thru Thirteen: Tuesday thru Thursday – Serengeti National Park

We are up early and head to the world famous Serengeti National Park. For the next 2 days we will have plenty of opportunity to explore the area and depending on the time of year and location of game, we may take picnic lunches and venture out for the whole day or choose to relax between a morning and afternoon game drive.

According to season, the camp moves to the scenically and outstandingly beautiful Moru Kopjes in June. Moru is the unique location for the Serengeti Rhino project and also by virtue of permanent water in the area boasts a large population of Lion with densities approaching the Seronera area but, unlike Seronera, the area is not congested and it is much more remote and private. The resident game is plentiful and is the reason the Lion population is high. The migration may or may not move through the area in June and the pattern of the migration is very difficult to determine in advance being subject to weather patterns and availability of water for the large herds.

From late December to the end of March the camp moves to the Ndutu area of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The Ndutu 2 campsite area offers access to the Serengeti short grass plains for the great migration and specifically when the wildebeests are calving around mid February to early March. The lakes offer essential water which brings the game in from the surrounding planes for excellent wildlife viewing. The area is also very good for lion, cheetah and excellent plains game, along with the migration.

There is also the option to do a Balloon Safari during your stay in the Serengeti, which is highly recommended if your budget allows – the whole experience is simply amazing and if you’re going to go in a hot air balloon then there is no better place on planet earth to do it than over the Serengeti or Masai Mara!

Accommodation: Kirurumu Under Canvas or similar – Serengeti

Meal Plan: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Optional Excursion Options: Balloon Safari USD$500 per person

Day Fourteen: Friday – Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast we will bid farewell to the Serengeti and make our way back towards Ngorongoro, game driving for the best part of the day.  We like to leave our Ngorongoro Crater descent flexible so depending on how successful you have been with game viewing on your way out of the Serengeti, and taking the weather into consideration, we will either visit Ngorongoro Crater on the afternoon or the following morning.

The Ngorongoro Crater is a highlight of any African Safari and you will not be disappointed. The game on the floor of the Crater is fantastic but it is the stunning views and the experience of being in the bottom of a Caldera that was created millions of years ago that will stay with you forever.

Accommodation: Kirurumu Under Canvas or similar- Ngorongoro

Meal Plan: Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner

Optional Excursion Options: NA
